19TH CENTURY DANCES Ballroom position: couples facing each other, man's right hand encircling woman's waist, his left holding her right at about waist height, her left resting on his shoulder. ** Men ALWAYS begin with the left foot; women with the right** You can either zigzag back and forth, or turn any direction, as the man sees fit. His left hand is the 'steering wheel', showing the woman which way he wishes to go next. Extended hands are at about waist level. 1. THE WALTZ A DEUX TEMPS: in either 2/4 or waltz time! "Anything like jumping is inadmissible." "Glissade and chassee" (slide, close, step) OR "two glides." This is a back-and-forth dance, which can be steered in any direction by the man. 2. POLKA REDOWA: (A WALTZ) Slide left -close right-jete (jump from one foot to the other) 3. GITANA WALTZ: Slide left-hop-hop; repeat right; polka mazurka (Slide left-close right, extend left-hop right); Then polka redowa 4. THE SCHOTTISCHE: "When properly danced it is very elegant and pleasing." Part One: Slide sideways, close, slide again, hop on left; repeat other direction Part Two: Step left, hop, step right, hop, left, hop, right, hop 5. THE GALLOPADE: 2/4 time (also called Galop, Gallop, Gallopede) "The only difficulty in this dance is to keep on the feet." Gallop for eight or four in one direction, and then back the other way 6. THE POLKA: Using four beats per step: Man's part: beginning with the left foot pointed close to right ankle: &(hop on right) 1. slide with left, 2. close with the right in 3rd behind, 3. slide left, 4. PAUSE (or spring slightly, turning 1/2); repeat beginning with other foot back the other way THE GRAND MARCH (POLONAISE): "This grand promenade is the prelude to balls...The music begins...and the dancers hand-in-hand make their entre into the apartments...." THE LANCERS' QUADRILLE: each figure danced separately, with bows and courtesies beginning each one. First figure (24 bars) 4 Hand couples forward and back 4 Forward again and turn the opposite 8 Cross over and back 8 Balance to corners and turn The 2s then take the lead, followed by the 3s and 4s Second Figure (20 bars) 4 Heads forward and back, forward again, leaving the ladies in the center; salute; the gentlemen retire alone 4 Chassez across to the right and left across the set, then back 4 Turn partners to place 4 Side couples divide, joining the heads in lines of 4, all forward and back 4 Forward again and turn partners to places Repeat four times, twice by heads, twice by sides Third figure (16 bars) 4 Heads forward and back, 4 Forward and salute (musicians pause while dancers bow and courtesy) and then retire 4 Four ladies cross right hands, half round in the center, while the gentlemen go around the outside, contrary direction 4 Face about and return back in the same manner, turning partners 1/2 at end to place Repeat with all couples in order Fourth Figure: (20 bars) 4 Heads lead to the sides and salute, 4 lead to the left and salute 4 Turn partners back to places (can salute partner after the turn) 8 Right and left Repeat with the side couples leading out to the right. Fifth Figure: 16 Right and left all around 8 1s promenade, ending in place facing out. All other fall into line in order behind them. 8 All chassez across (4), ending with one step forward and one back; recross in the same manner 8 March round, ladies turning right, men left, meeting and passing up the center to former places, fall back in two lines. 8 Joining hands, all forward and back, forward and turn partners to places. Repeat with other couples in turn. 16 Right and left all round a fifth time. 8 All chassez to finish (women chassez to the left in front of partner, who is chassez-ing to the right; honor this corner; chassez back across partners to the other corner; honor other corner) JIG #1: 8 all circle left (kemshoole if desired) 32 ladies balance to corners and turn With backs to the center, set twice to the man on the right, then turn him, end facing next man Repeat with each man in turn, including partner 8 all promenade around 32 gentlemen repeat above, setting and turning each woman in turn 8 all hands around to the left 8 all chassez across VIRGINIA REEL: a contra dance for as many as will First man and last woman, then last man and first woman (A variation is first two men with last two women, etc.) Forward and back Right hand turn Left hand turn Two hand turn Dos-a-dos First man turns with his partner by the right, then turns the next lady by the left all down the line. The lady does the same. 1s lead up and cast off, followed by all in a line. 1s chassez up, with hands, followed by all others on the sides 1s chassez down the center to the bottom. LA TEMPETE: Two couples (or more) facing a like pair up and down the room All forward and back twice All Chassez across and back, right couple passing in front All forward and back twice Cross right hands 1/2 round and back Hands round and back All forward and back forward and pass through to next couple JIG #2: (Quadrille set) 4 first couple balance twice toward the 3s 4 1s and 3s hands around to the left 4 1s balance to the 4s 4 hands around with the 4s 4 all hands around Each couple leads off in turn 8 all chassez across to finish POP GOES THE WEASEL: (a contra dance) Step: "an easy swinging trot, not violent, but decidedly meaning business."!! (Dick's Quadrille Book) Heads down the center and back Down the outside and back Right hand across with the second lady Left hands back with the second lady (4), second lady under (4) Right hands across with the second man Left hands back with the second man (4), second man under (4) THE CHEAT AND JIG: music in 2/4 time Generally danced in place of the last two figures of the plain quadrille NOTE: BALANCE here means FORWARD AND BACK!! 1s balance to the right as follows: forward and back, forward again, release hands and turn the opposite Balance to the next couple as before Then to the next Then to partners "Its (The Cheat's) name derives from the privilege allowed to either turn the opposite gentleman of not, without violating any rules of the dance. Either gentleman or lady has the same privilege of refusing, or not, at pleasure, and hence the title of Cheat." MONEY MUSK: A contra dance 1s give right hand and swing once and 1/2 round go below one couple and forward and back 6 right hand to partner, and swing 3/4 forward and back six swing to place and right and left four LE CARILLON DE DUNKERQUE: a French country dance! "Places as in a quadrille, but "it is of no consequence if there be an odd number of couples"!! Music for 8 bars (honors); gentlemen then take the place of the gentleman on his right. All balance twice and turn with new partners, finishing with the men in the middle All clap 3X, stamp 3X, and turn this new partner (8) once and a half to progress to next new partner. Repeat with ladies. RUSTIC REEL: in jig time 24 BARS Sets of one man between two ladies facing the same. Men gallop (4 steps) to the right with the opposite lady on his right. Repeat with the lady on his left. All take hands on the sides and forward and back. Forward again, dropping hands, and pass through to the next set. THE WALTZ QUADRILLE: in 6 figures, danced together without pausing Quadrille set, numbering counterclockwise around the set from the head (1s) Note: 1 step = one waltz or pas de bourree step Figure 1: A: Introduction (Bow and curtsey) A1: All circle RIGHT, A2: then LEFT, each 8 steps B1: First and third gentleman la main droite with partners for eight steps (first 4 using holubiec hold, last 4 regular right hand turn), ending with the men joining left hands in the middle, forming a line of four up and down the set B2: Second and fourth gentlemen the same, forming a cross C: Grande chaine all round, beginning with the gentlemen giving left hands to the next lady, passing her in two steps (16 steps) D1&2: All couples waltz once round counterclockwise, ending back in original places in the quadrille set Figure 2: A1: Head couples demi chaine anglaise; sides the same A2: Demi chaine anglaise back to place, with head couples beginning B1: Head couples turn as above, making a line, then raising all hands to make three arches B2: Second couple pass through the center arch, while the fourth couple separates and go through the outside arches, returning to quadrille formation at the end of the phrase C1: As above in B, with the side couples making the arches and the first couple going through the center first D1&2: All waltz around. B1: First and third couples la main droite for 8 steps as in the first figure, making a line with TWO arches up and down the set B2: Second and fourth couple circle once to the RIGHT in eight steps, taking hands through the arches, ending with all returning to place in the quadrille set C: Reverse the above D1&2: All couples waltz the set once round. Figure 5: A1&2: First couple les mains once round in two steps, then circle in turn with the 2s, 3s, and 4s, ending in home place. B1&2: First couple waltz around, first outside the set, then down the center to end, being followed by the 4s, then the 3s, then the 2s, as they pass, ending in two lines facing out the 4th couple's side C: 8: All ladies turn to the right, circle and pass behind their partners(4), taking hands and leading up the set (2), then releasing hands, turn left to face partners(2) 8: All men circle single to the right (4), then honor partners (4) D1&2: All couples waltz once round the set. Figure 6: A1: All join hands in a circle, the 1s lead through the 3s, separate, and lead the two lines back to place A2: Repeat, with the 3s leading B1: All the gentlemen la main droite with partners as above (holubiec for 4, normal turn for 4), ending with the men in the center, release hands, the men turn 1/2 clockwise to put RIGHT hands into the center and LEFT arms around partner's waist, holding left hands slightly B2: All right hand grand mill around (8 steps) THE WHITE COCKADE: a jig in quadrille formation 1s balance to the right (4), four hands round with that couple to place 1s balance to the couple on the left, etc. Hands all around to the left (8) Then repeat, with the next couple taking the lead THE SPANISH DANCE: (progressive, couple facing couple) Done with waltz-walk 16 all balance forward and back with opposite, then turn to take opposite's place repeat all around to place 8 moulinet all 8 all waltz around with partner to end up on opposite side facing a new couple COLLEGE HORNPIPE: a contra dance for 3 couples at a time 1st w set to the third man and turn the 2nd; first man the same Down the middle and back, cast off, rights and lefts below THE BASKET QUADRILLE: 16 forward two 8 balance across as in Quadrille 8 women circle left and back (skipping), remaining in the center 8 men circle left and back (chassez) outside the women, finishing to the left of partner men raise hands for ladies to go under, forming a basket 4 all go forward and back twice (one step) 4 all turn with partners two hands to place |
